Can I donate if I have a cold?
No.
How long before I can donate again?
You can donate every 56 days for whole blood donations. You can donate every 112 days for double red donations.
I donate all the time at Johns Hopkins. How can I get the Red Cross to stop calling me for other jobs?
Make a request online by creating a donor profile at redcrossblood.org and select contact preferences as “Do not call.”
I've been overseas. How can I tell before coming if I will be able to donate?

What if I can't remember the date of my last donation?

Why is there a height restriction disparity between males and females?
The restriction is based on body mass index and the amount of red cells needed for double red cell donations.
Can I find out my blood type today?
Not today. You will be able to find out in about four to six weeks after your donation. You will receive a letter in the mail with your blood type. You can also call American Red Cross Donor Services or download the American Red Cross app by texting BloodApp to 9099 to get this information.
Can I give if my blood count was low the last time I gave?
Yes, your iron will be tested every time.
I just came back from a trip to Europe. Can I still give?

I see that it’s busy now, but I had an appointment scheduled. Shouldn’t I be taken before a walk-in?
Appointments are given priority.
I just finished taking antibiotics. Can I still give blood?
You can give blood 24 hours after your last dose.
I’m taking medication for my heart (any ailment). Can I still give blood ?

What is the cutoff date for living out of the country to give blood?

I think I have a temperature. Can I still give blood?
We can let you know during the heath history assessment.
Are you sure the machine for testing iron is accurate?
Yes. Donors will be asked if they would like a recheck.
Can I have something to eat/drink before giving blood?
You may eat a meal before you donate, allowing time for your food to digest. You are also encouraged to drink room-temperature water right before you donate.
How long do I have to wait after eating to give blood?
You need to wait about 30 minutes after eating to give blood.
How do I prepare for donating so I am not turned down?
Drink lots of water, eat well-balanced meals and get plenty of rest. Other factors may determine deferrals.
