Fellows will participate in teaching, didactics, and at least one research or quality improvement project.
Sports Medicine is part of the internationally renowned Hough Family Institute for Brain Protection Sciences, comprised of the divisions of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Center for Behavioral Health, and Rehabilitative Medicine. Our team collaborates closely with psychology, neuropsychology, neuro-radiology and orthopaedics for a unique approach to family-centered care.
We have the only sports medicine program in the Tampa Bay area focused solely on the care of young athletes. Our mission is to provide the highest quality health care through evidence-based research in the treatment, education, and prevention of sports injuries. Our specialty care services meet the needs of each athlete and include primary care sports medicine, orthopaedics, emergency medicine, radiology, neurosurgery, nutrition, cardiology and sports rehabilitation.
Rotations in the program will include experiences in the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics clinic and Comprehensive Concussion Clinic, Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital for adult patient care, Eckerd College, and the renowned IMG Academy – a leader in education, training and professional development for young athletes from around the world. Our program provides exclusive medical services at IMG, one of the country’s largest boarding schools.
Our Sports Medicine program was developed to meet the needs of children, adolescents and young adults with sports injuries. The program director is board certified in both family medicine and sports medicine. The team consists of sports medicine physicians, two certified athletic trainers, a neuropsychologist, a sports psychologist, nutritionists and a dedicated research assistant.
The fellow will serve as team physician for a local high school, in addition to Eckerd College and IMG Academy. There are further opportunities for sports coverage with the Lightning High School Hockey League, Chargers Soccer and mass participation events, with the World’s Strongest Man Championship being held here in recent years.
The Johns Hopkins All Children’s sports medicine fellowship program provides the fellow a range of opportunities to pursue research, as well as quality improvement and educational scholarship.
Our Clinical and Translational Research Training Track and other mentoring programs support residents, fellows and junior faculty on a pathway toward independent, successful investigation in clinical and translational research in child health and disease.
Among the research studies we currently are conducting is an exploration of changes in brain function in high school athletes participating in sports at higher risk for concussion.
The Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hough Family Institute for Brain Protection Sciences is one of the few centers in the world with a focus on all aspects of the pediatric brain and central nervous system. We've brought together highly skilled pediatric specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitative medicine, psychiatry, psychology, neuropsychology, sports medicine and developmental behavioral medicine to design individualized treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each child.
In addition we collaborate with neuro-oncology, neuroradiology and neuropathology specialists to provide children with a broad spectrum of care. With a full-range of services from diagnosis to follow-up, our team of skilled physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and technologists provides comprehensive care before, during and after hospitalization.
We participate in clinical trials and are committed to scientific research. Our affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine based in Baltimore connects us to even more clinical trials and emerging therapies.
