Application Process
Johns Hopkins Medical Students and Residents
Applications for electives must be coordinated through the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Registrar’s Office.
- After completing an electives form, please obtain approval and signature from Dr. Joann Bodurtha in Blalock 1012D and send an email to Laura Gibson, the Medical Genetics Training Programs Administrator for the Department of Genetic Medicine providing your name, contact information, date the registration form was submitted to the Registrar’s office, and the dates you have requested for your elective.
- After obtaining Dr. Bodurtha's approval and signature, please submit the completed form to the electives coordinator in the Office of the Registrar, Miller Research Building, 733 N. Broadway, Suite 147.
Other US Medical Students and Residents
Application for the Medical Genetics elective at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine must be coordinated through the Office of the Registrar, where you will find the Visiting Student Policy and forms to complete. These five forms are required in order to be considered for the visiting student rotation:
- Clinical Application
- Immunization Record Form
- HIPAA Compliance Training for Visiting Students
- Confidentiality Agreement for Students
- HIPAA Security Awareness and Agreement to Comply

- An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae
- An up-to-date medical school transcript (in English or with English translation included)
- Two letters of recommendation from clinical faculty from your medical school.
Please ensure that the dates for which you apply are definite. Once accepted, date changes are difficult to accommodate and could result in rotation cancellation.
If you are accepted for a clinical elective, you will receive information about housing. You will be required to purchase health insurance through the Johns Hopkins University. Foreign or travel insurances are not acceptable.
Please understand that while Johns Hopkins is committed to teaching on a global scale, the number of international students we can accept for clinical electives is limited.
