Alternative Pathway

At Johns Hopkins, the required training for Alternate Pathway can be accomplished by combining year-long fellowships in one or more of the following sections/divisions: body imaging, emergency imaging, cardiothoracic imaging, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, nuclear medicine, research in radiology, and pediatric radiology.

You may express preferences for the combination of years of radiology training, and we will attempt to offer a four-year pathway that meets this as much as possible. Please note that our training positions are limited, and you may be offered a four-year pathway different from your initial request. Alternate Pathway candidates can expect to fully function at the level of a fellow during their time in any of the Radiology section/divisions.

Our program goal is that, once started, candidates will complete the entire 4-year pathway, with ongoing renewal dependent on meeting the department minimum standards for clinical competency, performance and professionalism. There may be the possibility of satisfying one of the 4 years as an attending Radiologist for exceptional candidates that meet departmental performance criteria and both Maryland licensure and USCIS requirements; contingent on staffing needs.

If you agree with the pathway suggested, you will be offered a virtual interview with participating sections/ divisions. Upon completion of the interview, Program Directors will discuss individual candidates and then will present selected candidates to the Johns Hopkins Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) for approval as an exceptional candidate. An exceptional candidate is one who has demonstrated a combination of clinical excellence amongst peers, leadership qualities, a track record of strong research and scholarly activity, and volunteer or administrative work.

If a candidate is not approved by the Hopkins GME Committee, then a formal 4-year pathway cannot be offered to the candidate.
