Exit Counseling Information for Graduating Students
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from medical school! As you prepare for the next stage of your career, the financial aid office has prepared a variety of resources and tools to help in managing your student loans as you approach repayment.
Use this page as your navigation guide through the exit process. You will find information about preparing for your exit counseling session, exit timeline, upcoming exit counseling events and profiles of the speakers who will be presenting during the exit sessions.
What should I do to prepare for my exit session?
STEP 1: The first step in preparing for your exit counseling session is to "Know What You Owe."
- Visit NSLDS (National Student Loan Data Servicer) at NSLDS.ed.gov - The NSLDS website displays total federal debt and servicer information.
- Visit ECSI website to verify amounts borrowed and copies of promissory notes of all JHU institutional and Perkins loans received through the School of Medicine.
- Complete the required Online Entrance counseling session through Studentloans.gov . In addition you will be able to view your loan debt and utilize the repayment calculators to estimate your monthly payment based on the repayment options selected.
- Download loan information into the AAMC MedLoan Organizer & Calculator - Loans can be automatically downloaded into the calculator from the NSLDS website. The Organizer and Calculator provides personalized comparisons of your repayment options. The MedLoan Organizer and Calculator tool was developed specifically to meet the needs of medical students.
STEP 2: The second step in preparing for your exit counseling session is to "Utilize Available Resources."
- Listen to monthly webinars providing unbiased information on buying or renting a home from Physician Loans. Which options are best for you and your family?
- Listen to upcoming webinars from Doctors Without Quarters. DWOQ provides stategies on managing your loans and repayment options in residency and post-residency.
- Attend a financial planning session presented by the Tim Radden Educational Institute. For the last several years, the Radden Institute has provided valuable information to fourth year students to help in developing financial strategies to build a strong financial portfolio.

When are the exit counseling events?
Exit Counseling Events will be held during the months of March and April in preparation for graduation. Below are a list of the events and speaker bios.

Exit Counseling Presenter Bios
Julie Gilbert, Senior Education Debt Management Specialist (AAMC) (Presenting at Triple)
Julie Gilbert, Senior Education Debt Management Specialist for AAMC, has over 20 years of financial aid and education debt management experience. Her career in student services has included working for a student loan lender and financial aid offices at various colleges/universities.
In her position at the AAMC, Ms. Gilbert works with the medical school community on issues surrounding education debt management and financial education. She strives to promote financial literacy so that students will have a strong financial foundation to repay their educational loan debt and balance their financial responsibilities. She manages the communication and marketing strategy, and designs and edits materials for the FIRST (Financial Information, Resources, Services, and Tools) program.
Ms. Gilbert holds a BS in Education with a minor in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Drew Tignanelli, President of the Financial Consulate (Presenting at Triple)
Drew Tignanelli is the President of the Financial Consulate. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) practitioner, a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) and a graduate of Towson University. As an advocate for individuals and their financial needs, Drew has developed a passion for educating the public about financial services, serving as an instructor through seminars to local businesses and municipalities via the Community College of Baltimore County. Drew is the host of Money, Riches & Wealth, a financial talk show airing live every Wednesday from 6:00-7:00pm on 680 WCBM Talk Radio in Baltimore, Maryland. Drew’s advocacy for his clients helped him develop the firm’s mission, “To help our clients lessen the worry and burden of money management so they have more time to spend building relationships.” Drew lives in Reisterstown, Maryland with his wife, Beverly. When he is not spending time with his two step-children and five grandchildren, Drew can be found golfing, fishing, cooking or gardening.
Thomas Bonvissuto, Chief Investment Officer Financial Consulate (Presenting at Triple)
Tom is the Chief Investment Officer at the Financial Consulate. He is a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) practitioner, a Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) and has the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) designation. Tom graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with a double major in Applied Mathematics and Industrial Management. A native of the Bronx, New York, Tom came to Baltimore in 1987 and has spent his career in a variety of roles within the Financial Services industry. Tom has managed portfolios for large pension plans, college endowments and not-for-profit foundations. He has also managed IRAs and investment accounts for individuals. His passion is helping people, whether it is with their finances, physically moving them to a new home or serving at a homeless shelter. At the Consulate Tom is responsible for investment research and is an integral member of the Investment Committee. He is seeking to find the right investments and asset allocations for our clients, so they can achieve their goals. Tom lives in a barn in Parkton, Maryland with his wife, Kim, and their five children, Harrison, Maddie, Isabella, Jackson and Carlo. Tom serves as the Finance Steward at his church. He also serves on the board of Somebody Cares Baltimore and is frequently found coaching recreation sports teams for his kids. Tom also still enjoys playing soccer himself.
Graham Ewing - Financial Consulate (Presenting at Triple)
Graham is a Financial Planner at the Financial Consulate. He works with clients directly and also works in a support role for other Planners on the team.
Graham is a Certified Financial Planner™ and a graduate of Towson University where he earned a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Economics. He has a desire to be continuously learning, both from other members of the team as well as in the classroom. With his CFP® behind him, he is now pursuing a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Financial Planning at California Lutheran University.
Graham not only enjoys learning, but he also has a passion for educating students on personal finances. He frequently speaks to classes at his alma mater, Towson University, as well as at Johns Hopkins University.
Graham is originally from Frederick County and now resides in Baltimore. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, playing sports, and spending time with his family and friends.
Brandon Barfield – Doctors Without Quarters, LLC
Brandon Barfield is a co-founder of DWOQ, and serves as the East Coast and Midwest Director of Education. He has presented at over 100 universities and hospitals on the topic of managing student debt. As a result of his success in developing partnerships with schools and hospitals in and around the Southeast, Brandon is regularly requested to lecture at some of the nation’s most prestigious hospitals and universities.
Brandon was a Financial Aid Supervisor at Kaplan University, a Financial Planner for The Henssler Financial Group, and served as an Enlisted Officer in the US Army. Brandon earned a BBA in Finance from Kennesaw State University, as well as an MBA from Kaplan University. With his diverse background in Financial Aid, Financial Planning and student loan advisory, Brandon has a broad understanding of the intricacies surrounding student loans, loan repayment strategies, and how they should be considered when graduates make other financial decisions. On the weekends, Brandon can usually be found spending time with his family, attending church, or enjoying the Georgia outdoors.
Tim Radden – Radden Education Institute
Timothy Radden is the founder of Radden Education Institute, LLC and has been a financial advisor to physicians for more than 25 years. He holds the professional charters of CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant).
He is a frequent guest presenter at prestigious universities, medical schools, teaching hospitals and medical education programs throughout the United States.
He founded Radden Education Institute as a give-back to the medical community. The organization is dedicated to financial security planning primarily for physicians. They’ve been in business, dedicated to this mission, since 1976.
Tim resides in Phoenix, Arizona and enjoys the company of his family. He collects southwestern art, hikes and studies desert wildlife and medicinal plants and is an avid photographer.
Tal Frank, VP - Physician Loans
Tal Frank, VP of Physician Loans offers expertise on mortgage loans for doctors. This popular Home Buying and Home Financing session is a favorite among graduating medical students and residents. This is a highly informative, non-sales workshop explaining the ins and outs of obtaining the best home financing for doctors. Emphasis is placed on overcoming the challenges facing a graduating med student and resident such as school loans and little savings.
