What is Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion?

Hospitalized patients generally spend much of their day in bed. Whether patients are in the intensive care unit or in other hospital units, immobility and its associated negative consequences may increase the length of stay and hospital-acquired harms, leading to worse patient outcomes.

Similar to strategies employed to reduce hospital harms like falls and pressure injuries, a systematic approach for mobility is necessary to drive desired outcomes.

Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion has established an eight-step framework that supports the development of a “culture of mobility” in hospitals.

What does success look like?

No different than fall risk, lab values and nutrition, a culture of mobility should be instilled within your institution, included in each patient’s care plan and communicated among the clinical team to help improve patient outcomes.

Every Day

Consistency is crucial for achieving positive patient outcomes.

Every Patient

All hospitalized patients benefit from moving, even those that can’t get out of bed.

Has a Mobility Goal

Mobility looks different for each patient, but is should be measurable.

Included in Their Care Plan

Documenting goals and outcomes in a patient’s record keeps everyone accountable and ensures smooth care hand-off.
