Residency Application

The Johns Hopkins University Emergency Medicine Residency is a four-year program. We participate in ResidencyCAS for PGY-1 positions through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Match. We welcome allopathic, osteopathic and international medical school applicants.

Application Requirements

The ResidencyCAS application

  1. Personal statement
  2. Dean’s letter
  3. Medical school transcript
  4. Results of USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 (and USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2, if available). Please note that in order to be submitted on our rank list, all applicants will be required to have passed USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2 by February 25th.
  5. Three letters of recommendation
    Note: We require that one letter be from an emergency medicine physician. We strongly prefer the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) be used for at least one EM letter.
  6. Applicants with previous residency experience must submit letters from their previous program director.

Foreign/international medical graduate applications must include all of the above requirements plus:

  1. A copy of your ECFMG certification
  2. Copies of all ECFMG, Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences (FMGEMS) and Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX) scores
  3. U.S. clinical experience, ideally at least one year
  4. At least three letters of recommendation
    Note: We require that at least one letter be from a US-based emergency medicine physician but it is suggested that two of your letters come from US-based emergency physicians.
  5. Graduation from medical school not more than two years ago
  6. No failing scores on licensing examinations
  7. The hospital accepts ONLY J-1 visas

Deadlines and Interview Scheduling

  1. Please try to have your application complete by ResidencyCAS' deadline of September 24th.
  2. Interviews will be offered to applicants with completed applications starting the first week after the dean's letter is released on October 1st. We will not offer interviews before October 1st except to our own Johns Hopkins students.
  3. Our final application deadline for submitting new applications is October 31st. We receive many competitive applications and encourage applicants to complete their application as soon as possible.
  4. Applicants who are invited to interview receive an official invitation e-mail notification through Thalamus, where applicants can manage their own calendar by self-scheduling and re-scheduling their interview date, if needed. Applicants also can wait-list themselves for alternate interview dates.
  5. Interviews will be held on Fridays between October 24th and January 16th except the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.
