What is Orthopedic Based Occupational Therapy?

Orthopedic based occupational therapy provides comprehensive care for infants, children and adolescents with a wide range of hand and upper limb conditions (arm, elbow, wrist and finger). Therapy is provided by an occupational therapist with advanced training in the treatment of complex congenital, musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions as well as specialized skills in fabrication of custom splints and casts.

Common Diagnosis Include:

• Arthrogryposis
• Brachial plexus injuries
• Camptodactyly
• Clinodactyly
• Congenital conditions - Polydactyly, syndactyly, radial or ulnar clubhand, constriction band syndrome
• Tendon/nerve repairs or transfers
• Traumatic or post-traumatic upper limb injuries
• Fractures of the upper extremity
• Soft tissue injuries and amputations
• Nerve injuries

Treatment and Methods Include:

• Soft tissue mobilization, scar management and desensitization
• Modalities for non-pharmacological pain and edema relief
• Joint mobilization and range of motion
• Upper extremity strengthening
• Coordination/dexterity training tailored to the identified deficits and activity demands
• Retraining and modification of daily living and self-care activities
• Adaptive equipment selection and training
• Custom fabrication of static and dynamic splints
• Serial casting for contracture management
• Instruction in energy conservation and joint protection
