Welcome to the Paulus Advanced Retinal Imaging and Laser Laboratory
The Paulus Advanced Retinal Imaging and Laser Laboratory is a dynamic, diverse, multidisciplinary group dedicated to improving the vision of patients suffering from eye diseases through applying biomedical engineering, lasers, photonics, optics, ultrasound, physics, nanoparticles, biochemistry, and mathematical modeling to develop novel retinal imaging systems and laser therapies.
We have developed a novel, multimodal molecular imaging system to visualize pathologic vasculature (including capillaries and neovascularization) of the eye using a safe energy level that incorporates photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescence microscopy. Using molecular contrast agents, we evaluate markers for the early detection of neovascularization. This work will allow physicians to practice individualized medicine tailored to each patient through providing real-time, in vivo molecular information to improve early disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring. It will also improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of neovascularization in diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions, and sickle cell retinopathy.
We focus on biodesign and novel, translational medical imaging and therapeutic technologies and have co-developed a novel, inexpensive system for providing tele-ultrasound, founded imaging companies, and investigate pattern scanning laser photocoagulation, laser-tissue interactions, and restorative retinal laser therapy to create minimally traumatic retinal laser therapy. We have also developed novel laser therapies such as Photomediated Ultrasound Therapy (PUT) and test long-lasting, sustained therapeutics.
