Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Program

Achieve Excellence in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

The Johns Hopkins Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship offers a unique and immersive experience for talented surgeons to train at one of the nation’s premier trauma centers. This fellowship is either a one-year fellowship and can be completed as a “stand-alone” year, or in the two-year sequence with our accredited multidisciplinary Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Our fellows function in the role of a junior faculty member with full admitting and operative privileges at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Fellowship prerequisites include: completion of an approved general surgery residency; American Board of Surgery eligible or certified; and the ability to obtain a State of Maryland Medical License.

Fellowship Experience

The fellowship provides broad clinical exposure to many aspects of acute care surgery and trauma. Fellows cover the combined acute care and trauma service and take in-house attending call at our Level 1 (JHH) and Level 2 (Bayview) adult trauma centers.

The trauma population gives extensive exposure to operative trauma management, as approximately 40% of cases seen at JHH and 25% of cases at Bayview are due to a penetrating mechanism. Additionally, fellows have the opportunity to treat a complex and diverse acute care surgery population and schedule elective cases. Fellows graduate with, on average, 300 to 350 cases.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital has 900-plus beds, treating approximately 2,910 patients annually in fiscal year 2023. Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is located in Southeast Baltimore, has 420 beds and treats approximately 2,852 trauma patients annually, also based on fiscal year 2023.

Throughout the year, fellows have the opportunity to become instructors in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET). Fellows have the opportunity to engage in academic pursuits, such as clinical research leading to peer-reviewed publications, as well as co-authoring book chapters with faculty. Fellows also contribute to resident and medical student education through didactic lectures, simulation sessions, animal labs and direct patient care.

Didactic Opportunities

Fellows have access to educational and clinical opportunities across the Department of Surgery including:

  • Halsted Surgery Morning Rounds
  • Surgery Grand Rounds
  • ACS/Trauma Core Lectures
  • Trauma Morbidity and Mortality
  • ED/Trauma Core Lectures
