What is a Learning Specialist?
- Experienced in providing relevant learning strategies, test analysis, coaching, advocacy, and support
- A professional with expertise in learning theory and higher education
- Experienced in working with post-secondary professional students
- Works with you to understand your needs/goals
- Remains current with accepted and appropriate instructional theory, practice and research
- Someone who can teach you tools to help you connect with your studying and content
Your Learning Specialist
Learning Specialist Ellen Kaplan, M.Ed., supports all medical students in years 1-4 as well as students in the graduate medical school. Students may work with the Learning Specialist to review and learn a variety of topics.
Areas of support include:
- Create a study plan for all types of exams
- Test taking strategies/test anxiety support
- Note taking support
- Study strategies and methods
- Discuss learning style preference
- Time management and organizational skills
- Prioritization of tasks to reduce stress
- Procrastination Solutions
- Review resources for STEP and SHELF exams
- Help students discern whether their academic difficulties are more content or process related
- Connect students to the Peer-to-Peer tutoring program
- Refer students to other services on campus such as counseling, tutoring, or other student support offices.
