$1B Graduate Aid Gift

A transformative gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies will make attending the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine free for most medical students and expand financial aid for nursing, public health, and other graduate programs.

Mr. Bloomberg’s gift was made possible by foundational support from donors and was structured to be in partnership with prior and future giving. Endowed and current use scholarships established before this gift will continue to be used as financial assistance, according to donor intent. Read more about the gift.

Why I Give

Alumni Reunion Sparks New Scholarship

A 25th reunion celebration turned into a night of inspiration when the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Class of 1994 decided to support a scholarship. In 2019, class representative Linda Yau, MD, suggested a fundraiser to show the class’s appreciation for the School of Medicine, and the idea blossomed when classmate Jason Koh, MD, recommended establishing a scholarship. By March 2021 — less than two years later — alumni fully endowed the Class of 1994 Scholarship Fund.

Caring for and Carrying Out a Brother’s Legacy

Dr. Annie Marie Garraway, sister of Levi Watkins Jr., MD, made generous commitment from her estate and a current five-year pledge to The Levi Watkins Jr., MD, Endowed Scholarship Fund, established in 2008 by members of the Class of 1983, honor her brother by providing financial assistance to students of color at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Endowed Gift by Legendary School of Medicine Alum Supports Students

For more than 60 years — since setting foot on an azalea-filled campus as a prospective undergraduate student, all the way to writing an extensive review of atherosclerosis in a cramped School of Medicine office as a professor emeritus — Hopkins was home for Moan Margolis, MD. In 2014 he created the Margolis Family Endowed Scholarship Fund to support scholarships for students in the School of Medicine.
