Nurse Extern Program
For rising senior nursing students, this summer program provides the opportunity to develop assessment, organizational, time management and priority-setting skills. See nursing theory put into practice. The program begins in May of each year.
Nurse Residency
This comprehensive 12 month program features educational sessions based on the standardized UHC/AACN curriculum. As a member of the Maryland Nurse Residency Collaborative, Sibley graduate nurses will have opportunities to enter chat rooms with hundreds of other nurse residents from around the country to share experience and build professional networks. This exciting curriculum is designed to support newly graduated nurses with an emphasis on leadership development, communication, patient safety, and professional career planning.
-
The program runs for 12 months with cohorts starting three times per year.
-
All new graduate registered nurses with less than one year of acute care nursing experience.
-
No! You are automatically enrolled in a cohort on your first day of employment.
-
New graduate nurses are hired on a rolling basis throughout the year. Each cohort commences in July, October and February annually. You will automatically join the cohort closest to your new hire start date.
-
There are approximately 10 to 20 new nursing residents in each cohort.
-
Seminars are held once a month, with a greater time emphasis in the beginning. The later sessions are more tapered in content and length. Topics include, but are not limited to quality and safety, nursing leadership, finance, professional development and evidence-based practice, as well as technical skills i.e mock codes. The seminars offers a variety of high-level experts who share scenarios, case studies and simulations to build on previous knowledge.
-
We understand the needs of new graduate nurses. We have created a core curriculum that addresses comprehensive clinical and professional goals, interweaving academic standards with real-life situations. This core curriculum meets national standards and also serves the new graduate’s needs beyond traditional orientation.
-
The program offers more than technical skills or monotone lectures. The seminars are filled with high-level experts who share scenarios, case studies and simulations with residency participants. This builds on previous knowledge and helps you develop a strong foundation in the nursing profession.
-
The residency allows opportunities for fellowship, support and feedback. We hear this often from program participants. The guidance and sponsorship you receive will help you during your transition and development into your professional role as a registered nurse.
-
During the second half of the program, we discuss evidence-based practice (EBP). You will be empowered to invoke practical change in your work environment through the development of an EBP project. These projects help you develop the skills to become more proficient with research, presentation and project management. The knowledge you acquire will strengthen your expertise in evidence-based nursing practices.
