Groups for Patients

Patients who attend groups through the John Hopkins Mindfulness Program may have a psychiatric diagnosis (e.g., anxiety or depression), sleep disturbance and/or medical issues. They are often referred by various departments and specialty clinics within Johns Hopkins Medicine including Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Johns Hopkins Healthy Eating, Activity & Weight Program; as well as private referrals from the community. There is no formal referral required to join a group. These groups have been held continuously since 2017. To our knowledge, this is one of very few programs in the area that accepts insurance, allowing a broader group of patients to participate.

Through systematic data collection on these patient groups, we have found significant improvements in anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbance, self-efficacy and quality of life, and many individuals who come through this course describe it as “life-changing.” For more information on the next available mindfulness group please call 410-550-6337. Our clinic staff will check on your insurance coverage as many insurance carriers cover the cost of such groups.

Courses for Faculty and Staff

The Mindfulness Program also offers extensive courses for staff and faculty members from all departments across Johns Hopkins Medicine and beyond to reduce healthcare provider burnout and improve well-being. Faculty and staff members from across many departments within JHU, members of leadership, students and support staff have enrolled in these programs. These courses include the 8-week MBSR program as well as a variety of workshops and retreats for stress management and well-being. These programs have been funded through the Johns Hopkins Center for Innovative Medicine, the Johns Hopkins University Health Services Wellness and Health Promotion Program, the Office of Talend Management and The office of Well-Being. Data from these groups have shown significant improvements in burnout, stress, work engagement, and mindfulness.
