Rehabilitation Research Experience for Medical Students (RREMS)
This program engages students in a research project within the Johns Hopkins Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Johns Hopkins University is a site sponsor for a summer program designed for medical students between M1 and M2 years and offered through the Association of Academic Physiatrists. This program is eight weeks long and carry a $4,000 stipend. Johns Hopkins also covers registration and travel to the AAP's Annual Meeting, where students present scientific papers or case reports. Applications are accepted via physiatry.org.
Research Areas: Projects may include muscle stiffness in CNS disorders, gait or movement analysis in neurologic populations, prevention of chronic back pain through behavioral interventions, dysphagia, pediatric TBI and concussion.

Description: Students care for inpatients and outpatients at The Johns Hopkins Hospital- Availability: 2 students
- Duration: full- or half-quarter
- Prerequisite(s): At least a second-year student beginning the fourth quarter
Objectives are to increase knowledge of and proficiency in:
- Major disabling conditions such as amputation, cancer, brain disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, neurologic disorders, pain, spinal cord disorders, and stroke
- Functional evaluation and neuro-musculoskeletal exam skills
- Interdisciplinary teamwork
- Importance of patient and family education

Description: Students assist in caring for children with chronic impairments at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.- Availability: 1 student
- Duration: half-quarter
- Prerequisite(s): Pediatrics clerkship
Students participate in inpatient rounds, outpatient clinics, and site visits to the Specialized Transition Program at the Fairmount School. Students develop skills in:
- Muscle tone management
- Examination of the child with severe traumatic brain injury
- Assessing the level of support for community function

Description: Students assist in caring for children with chronic impairments at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.- Availability:
- Duration: this elective if offered throughout the year
- Prerequisite(s): Medicine Core Clerkship for site placement at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. No clerkship required for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, or Kennedy Krieger Institute.
This clerkship focuses on issues of chronic disease and disability in a variety of clinical settings, and will have concurrent didactic work, discussion groups and simulation experiences on an inpatient rehabilitation unit, visits to a sub-acute or chronic care facility, outpatient clinics which emphasize care of patients who are disabled and chronically ill, and home visits.
Students will participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and patient/family conferences. Clinical sites will include Johns Hopkins Hospital (general adult rehabilitation), Johns Hopkins Bayview (geriatrics), and Kennedy Krieger (pediatric disabilities). There will be home visits, discussion groups, and simulation exercises. There are no overnight call duties.

In partnership with The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at Johns Hopkins offers students passionate about addressing gaps in healthcare access and outcomes the ability to attend senior elective rotations for the PM&R field.
PM&R Interest Group

PM&R interest group at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine was established to inspire interest in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation among medical students. The group holds meetings, workshops and other events to connect students with the faculty and further their understanding of and appreciation for the PM&R field.
