Limb Loss Physician Fellowship

The Johns Hopkins Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), in partnership with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, offers a one-year limb loss fellowship for physicians specializing in rehabilitation and related fields. The program provides advanced training and experience in evaluation, treatment and management of patients who have or are facing limb loss or limb differences, including limb salvage, limb restoration and limb loss rehabilitation methodologies.

Eligibility criteria: (1) completion of a three-year ACGME accredited residency in PM&R or an equivalent specialty (2) board certification or board eligibility (3) eligibility to work in the U.S. (citizenship or work permit)

Clinical Experience

The fellowship aims to develop leaders who can provide patient-centered care of the highest standard. Fellows rotate through several clinical and surgical care setting. The rotations provide hands-on experience in evaluation, treatment and management for patients with amputations.

  • Care for adults and children who have or are facing limb loss or limb differences
  • Clinical rotations in inpatient rehabilitation units and outpatient limb loss, rehabilitation and prosthetic clinics
  • Surgical rotations in orthopaedics and plastic and reconstructive surgery to better understand and be exposed to the latest techniques, such as targeted muscle re-innervation and osseointegration
  • Rotations at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center emphasizing diagnosis and management for patients with traumatic amputation
  • Participation in adaptive sports

Educational Experience

  • Anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of limb loss and limb difference
  • Basic nutritional principles and their application to the limb loss rehabilitation process, including wound healing, comorbid conditions and wellness
  • Psychological aspects of limb loss and restoration rehabilitation, and the continuum of care
  • Pathology and pathophysiology of illness and injury as they relate to limb loss
  • PM&R institutional Grand Rounds
  • Journal club
  • Joint hands-on didactics with the limb loss physical therapy fellowship program

Fellows also contribute to transformative research while honing skills that bridge the clinical and scientific needs of people with limb loss.
