Applying for the Residency
Two residents are accepted every six months, with start dates in the fall or the spring. Typically, there are:
- Two residents who are in their first six months of residency
- Two residents who are in their middle six months of residency
- Two residents who are in their final six months of residency
For Spring Positions
Application deadline: September 1
Interviews: September 15 to October 15
Start date: early April
For Fall Positions
Application deadline: March 1
Interviews: March 15 to April 15
Start date: early October
Prerequisites
Applicants must have:
- Graduated with a master's degree from an accredited physician assistant program with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, at least two and a half months prior to start date of program.
- Successfully completed the NCCPA certification exam, or plan to complete it at least two and a half months prior to the expected program start date.
- For April start date: by January 15
- For October start date: by August 1
- Eligibility for the Maryland state licensure.
Application Process
Please note that candidate must have all documents and application fee received by the program by the deadlines to be considered for an interview
- Candidate sends the following materials to program (email preferred)
- Completed Candidate Information Form
- Curriculum Vitae
- A personal statement that serves as an introduction to the candidate as a person, as well as the candidate's reason for applying and interest in emergency medicine
- A $40 application fee, paid electronically through this link, or via check or money order to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center at the address below. Candidate must have all documents and application fee received by the program to be considered.
- Candidate has others send the following supporting materials to program (email preferred)
- PA school transcripts (paper or electronic). These must be sent from the school to the addresses below. If currently enrolled, please send the most current transcripts.
- Three letters of recommendation. Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation:
- Must include reference’s contact email and phone number
- Must be on reference’s professional letterhead OR emailed from their professional email
- If a current student or graduated within 1 year, one letter must be from PA Program faculty
- If graduated > 1 year, one letter just be from your current supervising physician
- At least one letter from an emergency medicine clinician is preferred

Of note: this application is not posted until six or eight weeks prior to the application deadline. If it is within six weeks of the deadline and you are unable to locate the online application, please email [email protected] to inform us, and continue to submit the rest of your required application documents.
Interview
After the above steps have been completed, the candidate will receive an email confirming that your application is complete and will be reviewed. Selected candidates are then invited for interviews. If you accept the invitation for an interview, we ask that you send us a headshot in advance to [email protected].
We offer one interview day for each cohort, in October or November, and again in March or April.
Interview day consists of an information session, Q&A time with current and former residents, as well as a series of interviews with different members of the program leadership, Emergency Department leadership, and human resources. Currently, interviews are being conducted virtually. When in-person interviews resume, they will also include a tour of the hospital and the emergency department.
The deadline for all application materials for the spring 2025 residency position interview cycle is September 1, 2024.
