Food allergy is an immune response soon after eating certain food(s). The immune response can be life threatening at times. The centers for disease control reports, "that an estimated 3.9 percent of children under the age of 18 have food allergies. The prevalence of food allergies and associated anaphylaxis appears to be on the rise. There are eight foods that account for 90 percent of all food-allergy reactions: cow's milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soybeans, and wheat. Combined, food allergies cause 30,000 cases of anaphylaxis, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths annually". Food allergies can be temporary or lifelong.

Johns Hopkins All Children's nutritional services offer education and counseling specifically for the allergies your child has. We will provide you with guidance on how to read a food label and recognize what ingredients they will need to avoid. Alternatives will be offered as needed and diet will be analyzed to make sure your child is getting all the nutrients he/she needs in order to grow and develop adequately. If needed, the appropriate allergen free supplementation will be recommended to prevent deficiencies.
