Glaucoma Fellowship

The Wilmer Advanced Specialty Glaucoma Fellowship Training Program (ASTP) has trained has trained more than 55 fellows who occupy leadership positions as directors of academic glaucoma services nationally and internationally, as well as clinicians in private practice throughout the United States.

The program focuses on the diagnosis and management of the glaucoma via a flexible plan of direct observation and participation in medical, laser and surgical glaucoma and cataract care with eight full-time Wilmer faculty members who perform more than 1,200 surgical procedures per year and 15,000 outpatient visits. Only three clinical fellows are chosen to ensure maximum clinical and surgical experience.

Fellows are supported by leading faculty, the latest diagnostic equipment, the full range of Wilmer lectures, seminars, and conferences, and glaucoma-specific clinical and research discussion groups.

About the Training

Surgery

Wilmer fellows have an individual surgical experience that exceeds any other glaucoma fellowship in its quantity and diversity, including trabeculectomy and its revisions, tube shunt surgery and its revisions, simple and complex phacoemulsification, complex anterior segment surgery, the full range of less invasive procedures (Hydrus, IStent, goniotomy, canaloplasty, Xen), ciliodestruction (ECP, micropulse and Diode laser), and examinations and surgery on children with glaucoma.

Research

While fellows may choose to carry out clinical research projects during the fellowship, it is not required. Each fellow is trained in research design, methodology, and analysis. As valued members-in-training of our team, fellows have the opportunity to create flexible schedules in consultation with faculty, to facilitate a diverse range of clinical, surgical and research experiences.

Teaching

Fellows participate in the education of Wilmer resident physicians both in clinic and in the operating room. Each fellow presents orally at journal clubs which explore the best literature over a full range of central glaucoma topics. Learning is supplemented by weekly clinical discussion session (“Fresh Air”), at resident education sessions 4 times per year, and where appropriate at local and national meetings as platform or poster author.

Mentorship

Fellows meet weekly for one hour with Dr. Quigley to discuss topics in glaucoma, both clinical and research-related. There are many opportunities to select additional mentors within the Hopkins community.
