Our HistoryAbout the Wilmer Dome

The Robert H. and Clarice Smith Building was designed to mirror the octagonal Wilmer Dome atop our historic Johns Hopkins Hospital location.

The Dome, located on the third floor of the Wilmer building, remains open to public viewing of displayed historical interest items, including the portrait of founding director William H. Wilmer, M.D.; early ophthalmic instruments; the "President's Chair" used to examine eight U.S. Presidents; and photography from the Wilmer Eye Institute archives.
