    One of two Johns Hopkins University internal medicine residency programs, the Johns Hopkins Bayview Internal Medicine Residency Program is housed at the medical center campus, an academic clinical care and research center of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Our philosophy that “medicine is a public trust” pervades every aspect of our residency training, from our goal to train healers and leaders, to our attention to the diversity (both visible and invisible) of our residents, to our structured curriculum to teach mastery of physical examination skills and evidence-based medicine.

    Our cardiothoracic surgery program currently offers the range of surgical interventions — from coronary artery bypass, valve replacement and congenital heart procedures to minimally invasive cardiac surgery, off-pump coronary bypass, surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation, laser transmyocardial revascularization and robotic heart surgery. We also offer comprehensive treatment for congestive heart failure, and, as an integral part of the Broccoli Center for Aortic Diseases, comprehensive management and surgical repair of aortic diseases, including Marfan syndrome and Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

    The categorical medical genetics residency at Johns Hopkins is structured to include 18 months of concentrated clinical training and up to 18 months of individualized curriculum with protected time for mentored research training in basic, clinical and translational medical genetics. Residents in the categorical track concentrate on core clinical genetics during the first 18 months. For residents in each of the combined training tracks, clinical genetics training blocks alternate with the clinical training in the other primary specialties.

    The combined pediatrics-anesthesiology program at Johns Hopkins provides a unique opportunity to learn from faculty in both the pediatrics and anesthesiology departments. Combined training is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing a career in pediatric critical care, pediatric anesthesiology or pediatric pain management. The first year of residency is devoted to pediatrics—residents begin the program as interns alongside categorical pediatric residents. The second year is devoted to anesthesiology training with residents beginning PGY-2 year with categorical anesthesiology residents who have completed preliminary or transitional internships. The third through fifth years are spent in both departments alternating every three months for a total of six months in each department annually.

    The joint anesthesiology and emergency medicine training program offers a unique opportunity for trainees to obtain dual-board certification in two highly complementary fields, with high yield training in procedural skills and critical care management. Graduates represent a unique commodity to work as a dual or triple boarded physician in academic and community settings, with a broad skill set valuable in rural or low resource communities.

    Since 2005, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Maternal Fetal Medicine Program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Institute of Genetic Medicine have jointly offered a four-year fellowship program for combined training in MFM and medical genetics. Physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology and wish to participate in a maternal and fetal medicine (MFM) fellowship may integrate their MFM fellowship with a medical genetics residency.

    This newly established combined pediatrics and medical genetics residency is structured according to ABP and ABMGG requirements. This fully integrated program aims to train outstanding pediatric geneticists and physician-scientists who will become future leaders in pediatric genetics and genomics medicine. Residency training will be completed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and affiliated training sites. Residents who have successfully completed this program are qualified and eligible for examinations leading to certifications by ABP and ABMGG in clinical genetics.
