As an integral part of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Division of Medical Physics is dedicated to clinical service, research and development, and education, in alignment with Hopkins' tripartite mission.
Our mission encompasses three primary objectives:
- Delivering state-of-the-art medical physics practice to provide high-quality and safe care to our patients
- Conducting groundbreaking multidisciplinary research to advance radiation therapy and cancer management
- Training the future leaders in medical physics
Clinical Service
Medical physics involves applying physics principles and methods to diagnose and treat human diseases. At our division, we participate in the routine clinical services of radiotherapy at various Hopkins locations, where we are responsible for the technical aspects of modern radiotherapy, including image-guided radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy, adaptive radiotherapy, proton therapy, brachytherapy, and radionuclide therapy. Our efforts ensure that our patients receive the highest quality and safest care possible.
Research and Development
In research, we focus on solving clinically impactful problems through interdisciplinary studies. Our team closely collaborates with investigators in basic science, engineering, and medicine to develop novel solutions and translate discoveries and technical advances into clinical practice. Our research areas include advanced image guidance, anatomically and functionally-based adaptive radiation therapy, brachytherapy and radionuclide therapy, artificial intelligence, and novel therapeutic strategies such as proton therapy. We work with our colleagues in the Molecular Radiation Sciences Division to study radiobiology mechanisms, such as in FLASH therapy, and develop technologies to advance pre-clinical radiation investigations. We also aim to improve global healthcare and enhance radiotherapy in resource-limited settings.
Education and Training
In education, we offer a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program and a medical physics master's program, and we actively participate in other training programs. Our clinical and research programs provide an excellent training environment for our medical physics residents, postdoctoral fellows, and students to become leaders in medical physics.
