Global Health Research Track

Objective

To provide training in clinical research in resource-challenged low-middle income countries (LMICs), for fellows who seek a career in global health research, epidemiology, or international health policy at an academic medical center or governmental or non-governmental agency.

Clinical training

18 months of in-patient and ambulatory care blocks and continuity clinic

Total duration: Four or five years

Formal Training

An optional 5th year will consist of the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation Masters of Health Science degree program with an emphasis on quantitative clinical research. Coursework may include:

  • Research design
  • Biostatistics
  • Research ethics
  • Grant writing
  • Scientific writing for publication
  • Meta-analysis

Scholarship

The fellow will spend their first research year doing research overseas at an existing research site of the Johns Hopkins Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care. Sites currently include Peru, Uganda, and Nepal, among others. Mentorship will be provided by Johns Hopkins Pulmonary and Critical Care and School of Public Health faculty. Two more years will be divided between clinical (stateside) and research training, but may include short trips back to the research sites if needed. The fourth year will be all clinical training in Baltimore. Fellows will be expected to submit a Fogarty and/or NIH F-32 grant to support their work, to present their work at national conferences and publish in the medical literature.
