Pediatric Liver Transplant Program
Johns Hopkins Children’s Center has been performing pediatric liver transplants since 1987 and living donor transplants since 1992. We offer the largest pediatric living donor program in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and the only pediatric living donor program in the state.
We have performed more than 200 transplants in children as young as 3 weeks old through adolescence and for nearly every indication across the spectrum of liver disease, including:
- Biliary atresia
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis
- Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis
- Tumors of the liver
As part of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, we provide comprehensive care in a range of pediatric subspecialties, and we can manage the transplant process and long-term care of children as they transition to adult care. In addition, those who choose living donation will be in the same facility as their donor and work with adult doctors at the same hospital. All operations are performed in our state-of-the-art Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center building and children recover in private rooms in both the intensive care unit and general inpatient floors.

Liver Transplant for Biliary Atresia | Alicia's Story
Alicia was diagnosed with biliary atresia at 3 weeks old, and her family flew from Nairobi to Baltimore to get additional care for her.
