111.6 Organization Policy on Sedation Policies for Research Protocols Involving Diagnostic, Operative and Invasive Procedures
May 2005
The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Centerl have hospital policies that define the way procedural sedation is to be performed. These hospital policies have been approved by the Medical Boards and the Boards of Trustees. Policies of this kind are mandated by regulatory and professional bodies. It is the Organization’s policy that research involving sedation must confirm to the hospital sedation policies.
The JHM IRBs are authorized to approve use of sedation in an application for human participants research when the use conforms to the policy of the hospital where the sedation will take place. The full protocol guidelines are available to PIs on the JHM IRB website in the guidance entitled, “Sedation Guidelines.” This guidance includes specific drug administration routes and doses, and contact information for further questions.
