Research Summary
The overarching goal of this proposal is to determine the prevalence and incidence of subclinical tuberculosis (TB) in close TB contacts, and evaluate novel biomarkers and diagnostic tests for subclinical TB. The true prevalence and incidence of subclinical TB in close TB contacts is unclear, and the optimal diagnostic method for subclinical TB is unknown. The Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis (RePORT) International consortium, the largest observational, multi-country TB research network, can investigate these knowledge gaps. We will evaluate the prevalence, incidence, and biomarkers of subclinical TB in close TB contacts in RePORT-Brazil, RePORT-Uganda and RePORT-India. This project will utilize and build upon the existing strengths and infrastructure of several RePORT networks (Brazil, Uganda, India, and South Africa) as well as Rutgers, Vanderbilt, and Frontier Science. It will allow for validation and therefore assessment of the generalizability of novel diagnostic tests for subclinical TB.
