Research Summary
Community-based interventions to interrupt mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) transmission are needed to reduce the considerable global burden of TB, but evidence on how to spatially target these interventions for increased feasibility and efficiency is lacking. This proposal will to add to the evidence base by (1) developing a tool to estimate the subnational burden of TB by integrating programmatic, mobility, and survey data from Uganda; (2) characterizing transmission within and across distinct but linked communities using genomic data from 3 studies in Uganda and South Africa; and (3) projecting the impact and cost-effectiveness of TB prevention and case finding interventions by fitting a mathematical model of Mtb transmission to data from a large study in South Africa.
