INFECTIOUS DISEASES Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease globally and is associated with enduring lung and other organ impairment and disability throughout much of the world. While TB is preventable, many people do not have access to preventive treatments. Treatments for active TB disease must be taken for prolonged periods of time, and side effects may make people ill, causing many to discontinue therapy. This leads to disease recurrence and contributes to the emergence of drug resistant disease. Our faculty researchers have pioneered new therapies to prevent and treat TB. They are leaders of several multinational TB research consortia that conduct basic, translational, and implementation research here in Baltimore and in collaboration with researchers around the world to develop TB prevention strategies, more effective vaccines, rapid diagnostic tests, and effective short-course treatments. Additionally, our clinicians work closely with colleagues in the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) to provide TB diagnosis and treatment services in Baltimore. Maunank Shah, MD, PhD is the Medical Director of the BCHD TB program.
