INFECTIOUS DISEASES Mental & Behavioral Health

Patients or people who have infectious diseases often experience varying forms of stigma including enacted (experiences of discrimination or negative perception by others), anticipated (expectation of discrimination or negative perception), and internalized (application of negative perception to oneself). These have been shown to negatively impact quality of life and a wide range of infectious disease and non-infectious disease related health outcomes. Mental health disorders and substance use, including alcohol and drug use, may also increase risk for some infectious diseases and, if not addressed, negatively impact infectious diseases treatment. Our care providers and researchers identify barriers that may hamper treatment, develop treatment plans that address psychological and psychiatric needs, and design and evaluate interventions that help address mental and behavioral health to improve infectious diseases treatment outcomes and overall health.
