Academics & Leadership

Nationally-renowned, the Division of Hospital Medicine continues to develop into one of the finest academic hospitalist programs in the country.

Most division physicians are tenure-track faculty at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and have important research, teaching and administrative leadership roles at the University, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and other various professional societies.

At least 30 percent of faculty time is dedicated to academic endeavors. Some have increased protected academic time to further funded research or administrative projects.

Research

The Division of Hospital Medicine faculty members are making important research contributions in the fields of clinical medicine, healthcare quality improvement and medical education. Members have collaborated with each other on research projects, such as the Society of Hospital Medicine-funded “Geriatric Transitions in Care from Hospital to Home” project (SafeSTEP), and with members of the Divisions of Infectious Disease, Cardiology, Geriatrics and General Internal Medicine. The Division of Hospital Medicine supports two academic mentors and hired a research assistant in FY06 to foster the academic mission.

Teaching

Division of Hospital Medicine faculty members teach throughout the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, with significant contributions to the Hopkins Colleges Advisory Program and regular lectures for Internal Medicine clinical clerks, the Evidence-Based Medicine course for interns, the Basic lecture series for second- and third-year residents, and the monthly Hospital and Consult Medicine lecture series. Successful electives in hospital medicine for fourth-year medical students and residents have been developed, and a fellowship in academic hospital medicine started in July 2008. CIMS members also have been awarded the Professors Award for Teaching Excellence at Hopkins, and the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Leadership

Division of Hospital Medicine members are participants in and leaders of multiple committees at Johns Hopkins Bayview, including but not limited to the Medical Joint Practice Committee, the Credentials Committee, the Hospital Capacity and Emergency Department Throughput Committee, the Medication Process Committee, the Meditech Provider Process Committee, the Cancer Committee, the Clinical Practice Association, and the Bylaws Committee.

Society of Hospital Medicine

The Division of Hospital Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center has strong ties to the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). Eric Howell, M.D. and current CEO of SHM, is an adjunct professor within the division, and many other divisional members have served or continue to serve in important leadership roles, including president of SHM, membership on the SHM Board of Directors, leadership of the SHM Baltimore Regional Chapter, chairs of various SHM committees and special interest groups, and lecturing and facilitating at national SHM conferences.
