Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowships

The Johns Hopkins REI Fellowship program is proud to offer two ACGME approved fellowship programs: the REI Fellowship Program and the REI-Medical Genetics Combined Fellowship training program. Our fellowship programs provide fellows with balanced clinical, surgical and research training experience to prepare them for a successful academic career in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

About Our Programs

While there are many things that set this program apart, it is the diversity in clinical, surgical and research training that distinguishes our fellowship programs. Learn from experts who manage infertility, practice reproductive endocrinology, and even assist with onco-fertility preservation. With the opportunity to study both complex diagnostic and therapeutic surgical procedures and to train in both clinical and basic science research.

For candidates with a special interest in complex reproductive surgery, we are a pilot site for the Society for Reproductive Surgery (SRS) Surgical Scholars Track, which allows for additional surgical experience through partnership with minimally invasive GYN surgery and gynecologic oncology.

REI/Genetics Training Program

The field of REI is quickly changing thanks to rapid advancements in reproductive genetic technologies. As the underpinnings of the genetics basis of disease, including infertility, are better understood, there is a great need for REI physicians to have a deeper understanding of genetic principles. To meet this need, we are pleased to offer a unique, 4 year-ACGME approved, combined REI-Medical Genetics fellowship training program. Through partnership with the Department of Genetic Medicine, our fellows gain in-depth training in areas of genomics, developmental genetics, biochemical genetics, population genetics, computational biology, and the genetics of complex disease.

Fellowship Application

We are only accepting applications for the REI-Genetics Combined Fellowship Training Program, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. The REI Fellowship position for the 2026 academic year has been filled. Please refer to the curriculum details for information on the next available application date for the REI Fellowship.

Application Process 

Applications for the REI-Genetics Combined Fellowship Training Program should be done via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). There is a single application for both programs, and the components of the application are set by ERAS.

Requirements

ABOG eligibility and a state medical license are REQUIRED.

Please submit three letters of recommendation via ERAS, one of which must be from your current Program Director or Department Chair.

Once your application is submitted, please email ONE PDF document to include all your CREOG scores to jstyle1@jhmi.edu.

*If you are interested in applying for the REI-Genetics Combined Fellowship, in addition to completing the ERAS application, you must indicate your interest by e-mailing Jennifer Lake at jstyle1@jhmi.edu.

Applications will be reviewed by faculty members from both REI and Medical Genetics training programs. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview. Additional information on Board requirements for combined training in REI and medical genetics can be found at ABOG and ABMGG websites.

On Fellowship ResearchReproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Research

Fellows will experience structured basic laboratory, and/or clinical research. Our division currently boasts multiple NIH-funded faculty members with over 20 active clinical trials. Through partnership with the Division of Reproductive Science and Women’s Health Research, led by Dr. James Segars, our fellows have unparalleled access to both clinical, translational and basic science research training. In addition, fellows have the opportunity to obtain research awards, and funding from both internal and external sources, allowing them to become independent investigators.

Fellowship History

  1. 1939 (Location): Georgeanna Seegar Jones Establishes Reproductive Endocrinology

    The first Division of Reproductive Endocrinology was established at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions by Dr. Georgeanna Seegar Jones in 1939. Dr. Georgeanna Jones became the first full-time gynecological endocrinologist at a medical school. Dr. Howard W. Jones, Jr., one of the foremost pelvic surgeons of his generation, established an international reputation in reparative and reconstructive surgery of the female genital tract. Dr. Howard W. Jones, Jr.'s skill in surgery and Dr. Georgeanna Seegar Jones' expertise in endocrinology made them a highly respected, well-rounded team that worked closely with residents and fellows to provide an expanding knowledge of endocrinology before a formalized sub-specialty training program in this area was established by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

  2. 1973 (Document): A Fellowship Training Program is Formalized

    A formalized training program in Reproductive Endocrinology, approved by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was begun at Hopkins in 1973 and Dr. Anne Wentz was the first individual to receive this fellowship training. When Drs. Georgeanna and Howard Jones moved to Norfolk, Virginia to join the Eastern Virginia Medical School a Board-approved program in Reproductive Endocrinology was absent from Hopkins from 1978-80.

  3. 1981 (Milestone): Reproductive Endocrinology Evolves at Hopkins

    In 1981 a new Board-approved program in Reproductive Endocrinology was begun at Hopkins under the Directorship of Dr. John Rock who remained in this position until he resigned in 1991 to become Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

  4. 1991 (Document): A New Fellowship Director

     Dr. Howard A. Zacur served as the director of the fellowship program from 1991-2021.

  5. 2021 (Document): Fellowship-trained Faculty Take On Leadership

    Dr. Chantel Cross, a graduate of the JHH REI Fellowship program, assumed the Directorship of the fellowship program from 2021 to 2024. Since 1981, there have been more than 60 graduates of the Hopkins REI Fellowship Program, 18 of which have become division chiefs, 7 OB/GYN Department Chairs, 2 medical school deans, and 2 chancellors.
