Support the Fertility Center July is Fibroid Awareness Month

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors of the uterus, and an estimated 77% of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime, most of them by age 50. In a pre-clinical, proof-of-concept study from Johns Hopkins Medicine, researchers found that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea compound with powerful antioxidant properties, could be promising for both treating and preventing uterine fibroids.

Philanthropic support assists trainees during their residency training, through fellowships and during new appointments in developing research. Federal research awards are hard to obtain and require preliminary data in order to be considered. Supporting the Gynecology and Obstetrics Alumni Society provides bridge funding that will help trainees and early career faculty members compete for larger clinical research grants.

The Violet Project was born to enhance access to menstrual products and reproductive health care for socially vulnerable adolescents and young adults. Expanded Fertility Center Provides Comprehensive Care

The Johns Hopkins Fertility Center recently expanded, doubling the number of consult and ultrasound rooms, creating additional workspace for clinical and nonclinical employees, and adding a team room where doctors, nurse practitioners and medical assistants can discuss patient care. “We’ve built the center with the patient experience in mind and in a way that facilitates communication among all members of the care team,” says Valerie Baker, director of the center and of the Johns Hopkins Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

‘Game-Changer’ Intervention for Ovarian Cancer Prevention

Ovarian cancer is a notoriously difficult group of diseases to diagnose and treat. There is no effective screening method — most people have widely metastatic cancer when they start showing symptoms, and most patients die within five years. Additionally, the most lethal type — high-grade serous carcinoma — is the most common, and is the fifth-most common cause of cancer-related death for women in the U.S. A new approach offers some hope in preventing this disease, which will affect 1 in 78, or 1% to 2%, of women in their lifetimes.
