What is the JHGWEP?
The Johns Hopkins Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (JHGWEP), formed in 2015, is an educational initiative of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology of the Department of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The Johns Hopkins Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program is located on the campus of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
The JHGWEP is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. HRSA is the primary Federal agency for improving health and achieving health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce and innovative programs. HRSA notes four statutory purposes for the GWEP’s:
- Transforming clinical training environments to integrated geriatrics and primary care delivery systems to ensure trainees are well prepared to practice in and lead these kinds of systems.
- Developing providers who can assess and address the needs of older adults and their families/caregivers at the individual, community, and population levels.
- Creating and delivering community-based programs that will provide patients, families and caregivers with the knowledge and skills to improve health outcomes and the quality of care for the older adult(s).
- Applicants may also choose to address providing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) education to families, caregivers, direct care workers and health professions students, faculty, and providers.
There are 42 GWEP’s in the United States.
The purpose of the JHGWEP is to develop an integrated geriatric primary care health care workforce that maximizes patient and family engagement and results in improved health outcomes in Maryland. We propose to accomplish this by integrating geriatric principles into the workflow of selected community-based primary care practices, and by engaging older adults in their own health care by integrating and expanding the services of community-based health advocacy and educational organizations.
