We do not currently offer a dedicated outpatient endocrinology elective for medical students. However, for those doing a 4-week elective, we can arrange for you to rotate through select endocrinology clinics upon request and based on availability. Similarly, for Johns Hopkins internal medicine residents who are/have already done the inpatient consult service rotation, we can arrange for you to rotate through select endocrinology clinics upon request and based on availability.
Please be aware that cancellations represent a significant problem. Due to the rotation’s popularity, other trainees will usually have been refused an opportunity to take the elective. Consequently, cancellations are highly discouraged within 2 months before the scheduled start of the rotation.
Endocrinology Consultation Service Elective for Visiting Medical Students from Outside Institutions
A limited number of clinical electives are available to final year medical students from outside institutions with an affiliation with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Please refer to the Visiting Medical Student office first for the most current procedures related to this.
Clinical Observership Requests
Unfortunately, we no longer offer clinical observerships in endocrinology for medical school graduates not currently enrolled in a US-based internal medicine residency.
Inpatient Endocrinology Consult Service
Overview
During the rotation, you will be working closely with on our inpatient endocrinology consult fellow. Consultation requests are all received through EPIC. The consult fellow will assign the consults to the trainee, who is then responsible for interviewing and examining the patient, and reviewing all relevant records, laboratory and radiological data. You will then discuss the consult findings with the fellow. You will present your patient on attending rounds, which are generally held daily in the afternoon. Always discuss potentially emergent cases immediately with the fellow or attending.
After attending rounds, you will be responsible for completing the consultation note. Please discuss questions related to note structure and content with the fellow. It is also essential that the consultation team relay the recommendation directly with the primary team.
Once assigned to a case, you are responsible for visiting patient daily and reporting to the fellow and attending until it is determined that the case no longer needs our attention. You should also follow-up all requested laboratory and radiological studies, even these reports will not return until after discharge. When you leave the service, you should sign out all your cases to the fellow.
Professionalism
You must be on time and ready to contribute. Any conflicts (e.g., other longitudinal clinics, interviews, or other coverage assignments) must be cleared in advance with Roberta Knox, the medical training program coordinator, who will notify the consult fellow and attending. Personal emergencies should be reported promptly to the consult fellow. Everyone must be neatly groomed with a clean white coat, name tag, and dress professionally (i.e., no sneakers and men should wear a tie).
