Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Neurologic Music Therapist

Dr. Kyurim Kang is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine and a certified neurologic music therapist.
She received her B.M. in Music Therapy from West Texas A&M University with a Cum Laude in 2010. Prior to pursuing her Master’s degree, she has been working as a music therapist for children with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder in the U.S and in South Korea from 2010 to 2013. She aspired to understand the neural aspects of how and why music helps children with disabilities to move, communicate, and be happy based on scientific evidence-based approach. This desire motivated her to start her Master’s degree in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) which allowed music to be integrated into an interdisciplinary context of rehabilitation modalities based on neurobiological principles of brain and behavior at Colorado State University. Her Master’s thesis explored the effectiveness of musical neglect training to improve visual attention/perception for people with visual neglect from stroke. Dr. Kang obtained her Ph.D. in Music and Health Science, and the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience from the University of Toronto. During her Ph.D., she investigated how electrical brain activities using EEG synchronizes between children with autism spectrum disorders and cerebral palsy, their parents, and music therapist during music and storytelling sessions.
She has been published peer-reviewed papers in various research fields from survey research to brain imaging studies in Frontiers in Neurology, Frontiers in Neuroscience, Developmental neurorehabilitation, Parkinson’s Disease, and Medical Problems of Performing Artists. Dr. Kang has also been invited as a guest lecture in local, national, and international community and organizations. She has translated “Handbook of Neurologic Music Therapy” into Korean to support Korean community to extend their understandings of NMT. She currently focuses on the research if brain stimulation and NMT enhance upper performance for patients with atypical parkinsonian disorders. She is also co-leading several music therapy and NMT sessions. Her ultimate research goal is to bridge the gap between scientific evidence-based music research using brain imaging (e.g., EEG, fMRI, fNIRS) and music therapy clinical practices.
