For children with expressive language delays, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can help them to communicate with others.

In our weekly AAC preschool language class at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, we help preschool-age children learn to effectively use AAC (which includes a range of communication methods using different technology) devices within a social setting. Children practice using their AAC devices to interact and build relationships through structured play, music, art and other motivating activities.

Children attend the 90-minute class once a week, with up to seven children in the class. The class is run by two certified pediatric speech-language pathologists. Each class will feature a theme with associated activities designed to target language use and social development.

Parents and caregivers will also be coached on how to help their child practice and grow their skills at home.

Who is a candidate for the AAC preschool language class?

• Children ages 2-5 who have had a speech-language evaluation and who currently use a speech generating device to augment expressive language.
• Children with no more than mild behavioral difficulties.

How do I get my child started in the class?

Your child must first be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist to determine if the Let’s Talk AAC Preschool Language Class is appropriate based on your child’s current skill level with his or her speech generating device.
