The Department of Pediatric Surgery offers a wide range of valuable training opportunities.

Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery
This two-year clinical fellowship provides fully trained general surgeons the opportunity to acquire additional expertise in pediatric surgery.
Under faculty supervision and mentorship, the fellow will lead both inpatient and outpatient care and gain a broad surgical experience that includes general and thoracic surgery and specialized cases involving oncology and congenital anomalies. Additional training opportunities include selected rotations in neonatology, critical care medicine, urology and gastroenterology.

Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Surgical Critical Care
The Department of Pediatric Surgery offers an ACGME-approved one-year clinical fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care. This program provides valuable training opportunities to manage patient care under faculty supervision and mentorship. Surgical patients include neonates with congenital surgical anomalies, trauma patients, patients with surgical diseases and non-cardiac patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The fellow will serve as a leader within the surgical critical care service.
The fellow will work in the congenital diaphragmatic hernia unit and learn essential critical care concepts from this population. Elective rotations in anesthesia, pediatric critical care medicine and the cardiovascular intensive care unit are also available. In addition, the trainee will rotate at Tampa General Hospital, which will allow a comprehensive experience caring for adult surgical patients.
Fellowship Highlights
- Length: One year
- Start date: Aug. 1
- Requirements: Applicants must have completed their general surgery residency training and be board certified or board eligible in general surgery. Candidates interested in the fellowship before completing their general surgery residency should have completed a minimum of three years of their surgical training program.
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and ECMO Research Fellowship
The congenital diaphragmatic hernia research fellowship is for general surgery residents who seek a career in pediatric surgery. Residents selected for this fellowship plan to take a one- to two-year hiatus during training to focus on this research experience.
The resident will be paired with the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia program director who will serve as a mentor. The resident will benefit from the program’s quality, outcomes, and will contribute to both new and ongoing research projects. Although it is not a clinical fellowship, the resident will cover night call every fourth night—provided they have limited clinical and operative experience in pediatric surgery.

Surgery Resident Research Fellowship
The Surgery Resident Research Fellowship is for general surgery residents who seek a career in pediatric surgery/academic surgery. This fellowship is for residents who plan to take a one- to two-year hiatus during training to focus on research experience. The resident will be paired with a pediatric surgery faculty member who will serve as the mentor. The resident can also collaborate on the division’s quality, outcomes and clinical trial research. Although it is not a clinical fellowship, the resident will cover night call every fourth night, providing a limited clinical and operative experience in pediatric surgery.

Surgery Research Internship
Our Surgery Research Internship is available to current undergrad or graduate students looking for exposure to research over the summer.

- Length: 4-8 weeks; start date is flexible
- Stipend: unpaid opportunities available, limited paid opportunities available
- Requirements: Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
Medical Student Externship
The Johns Hopkins All Children's Pediatric Surgical Service team is involved in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of surgical and potentially surgical diseases on neonates, infants, children and adolescents. Under the supervision of the fellow and/or attending surgeon, the student physician will participate in all aspects of patient care, including initial evaluation, performance of detailed history and physical examinations, initiation and evaluation of diagnostic laboratory and radiologic testing and the formulation of plans of resuscitation and patient care. The student physician also will assist in the surgical care of patients in the operating room and be familiar with the general techniques of surgical procedures. The student also will assist in the postoperative care plan, perform daily rounds, ward care as needed and assist in discharge planning.
Additional duties include participation in outpatient clinics, exposure to pediatric and neonatal intensive care units and emergency evaluation of pediatric trauma patients. The student is encouraged and required to attend all teaching conferences as scheduled.

- Requirements: Students must be in their fourth year of medical school and in good standing at an accredited U.S. medical school
Pediatric Surgery Research Fellowship
The Pediatric Surgery Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a one- to two-year program in which the research fellow will develop and conduct a variety of clinical and translational research projects. Johns Hopkins All Children’s is a 259-bed freestanding children’s hospital and tertiary referral center for west-central and southwest Florida.
Ongoing projects include clinical trials, prospective observational studies, multicenter research with regional/national research consortia, and outcomes research using large databases encompassing pediatric surgery, education and trauma.
