Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Pediatric Stroke Program

The neonatal and childhood stroke experts at Johns Hopkins All Children’s work together to develop individualized treatment plans for our patients—from infants to children and teens based on evidence, leadership in the field, and the latest research.

The Stroke Program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital provides family-centered, comprehensive, and coordinated care to infants, children and teens who have a cerebrovascular disorder which can lead to a stroke. We combine the expertise from Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

Optimal care of a child who has experienced a stroke involves a variety of pediatric specialists working together to develop individualized treatment plans. The Stroke Clinic at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic that brings together a team of professionals devoted to stroke in children including neurologists, hematologists, rehabilitation physicians and therapists, neuropsychologists, radiologists and a care coordinator.

Meet our team of stroke experts

Many families are not aware that the risk of stroke is highest during the first year of life, but it can occur at any point during childhood or adolescence. Stroke in older children occurs less often, and has a variety of causes that can impact treatment options. These conditions can have serious consequences on a child's neurological development and overall health. Because of the unique expertise required to achieve best outcomes in pediatric stroke, children who have had a stroke should receive care from a multidisciplinary team of subspecialized experts in pediatric stroke.

Our Stroke Program extends throughout the entirety of Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital system. This starts in the emergency center and continues with inpatient care in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) where we provide rapid, specialized care for children experiencing a stroke. Our unwavering commitment ensures the quickest and most effective response and treatment, facilitating the best possible recovery for each child. This dedication to stroke excellence continues through the pediatric medicine unit with long-term care and consultation in the outpatient setting. The team’s collaborative and coordinated approach to care is aimed at preventing future strokes and helping a child to achieve maximum recovery from stroke.
