Please note that outpatient rehabilitation services is only for Speech Therapy Modified Barium Swallow Studies.*

Our inpatient services include physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as physiatry services (those provided by a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician). *Speech Therapy provides outpatient modified barium swallow study diagnostic and FEES (flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) services.

The goal of our programs is not only to eliminate the deficits of an injury or musculoskeletal problem but also to prevent it from returning. We use a range of advanced techniques designed to restore normal strength, motion, flexibility, balance and function and to reduce pain. Our Therapy Services

Inpatient Physical Therapy

Our Suburban Hospital physical therapists provide physical therapy (PT) services to hospital inpatients. They are trained to provide PT to orthopedic, neurologic (including vestibular and balance disorders), trauma, geriatric and sports patients. Our PTs provide a continuum of care from trauma through postoperative and prevention. PTs use modalities such as heat/cold, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis and massage for pain syndromes. Therapeutic exercise, functional training, balance training and gait training are used for patient mobility training.

Inpatient Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists (OTs) work with people to address issues that affect their activities of daily living, or ADLs. Their job is to provide therapy to help increase one’s independence with daily activities, which may require helping one to compensate for an injury. OTs see patients throughout all levels of care within a hospital setting. The occupational therapy service also provides ergonomic work area assessments to hospital employees.

Inpatient and Outpatient Speech Therapy

Our speech-language pathologists work together with the patient's physician to provide comprehensive rehabilitative treatment for neurologic and general speech and language disorders in the inpatient setting. Outpatient modified barium swallow study diagnostic and FEES services are also available.

Our staff creates individualized and goal-oriented treatment programs using the latest evaluation and treatment intervention techniques. Each patient's progress is followed closely throughout the regimen and communicated to the patient's physician. Consulting physician specialists, if needed in conjunction with the patient's personal physician, include internists, neurologists, pulmonologists, physiatrists, otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists and pediatricians. Additional allied consultants include dietitians, nurses and teachers.

Diagnoses treated:

• Traumatic brain injury (adolescent and adult): Computer-enhanced therapy focuses on memory, concentration and attention, problem-solving, organization and reading comprehension.
• Cerebrovascular accident: Treatment addresses language deficits, cognitive deficits, word finding problems and dysarthria.
• Swallowing disorders: Treatment includes videofluoroscopic evaluations, consultations with dietitians, an oral-motor exercise program, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and special guidelines for the elderly.
