Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) may be ordered as part of routine health assessment, screening for those with workplace exposures, diagnostic assessment for those with suspected lung disease, or management of those with chronic lung disease over time.
Routine PFT’s include:
- Spirometry: Measures the flow of air with forced expiration and may be repeated after a bronchodilator inhaler is given.
- Lung volumes: Measures the volume of air in the lungs at different levels of inspiration and expiration.
- Diffusing capacity: Measures the ability of the lungs to transfer gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Specialized testing includes:
- Methacholine Challenge Test
- 6 Minute Walk Test
- Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test
- Exercise Induced Bronchoconstriction Test
- Oxygen Shunt Studies
- High Altitude Simulation Test
About our Laboratory
The Johns Hopkins Pulmonary Function Laboratories have a tradition of excellence with a history that dates back to the early 1940s. Early leaders in the field of pulmonary physiology from Johns Hopkins described the principles of airflow limitation and developed early techniques to measure oxygen tension in arterial blood. Today, we perform over 30,000 pulmonary function tests each year at several locations for patients from our local community and those that travel from other states and countries.
