The Mood Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults Program (MAP) at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is a specialized treatment program for adolescents and young adults (ages 13-22 years old) who are currently experiencing mood or anxiety symptoms. The program is run by a multi-disciplinary team with significant expertise and experience providing evaluation and ongoing outpatient treatment.

Who are our patients?

MAP treats adolescents and young adults, ages 13 to 22, with diagnoses of:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Bipolar I Disorder
  • Bipolar II Disorder
  • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Dysthymic Disorder
  • No substance abuse
  • No unmanaged major medical illness

Recognizing symptoms early can lead to better outcomes. It is important to note that mood disorders present differently from person to person, and may appear differently in children and adolescents than in adults. Signs that you or your child may have a mood disorder include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness or irritability  
  • Feeling hopeless or helpless
  • Feelings of wanting to die
  • Loss of interest in usual activities or activities once enjoyed
  • Difficulty in relationships with peers, teachers, and/or family members
  • Sleep disturbances (for example, insomnia or hypersomnia)
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Isolating from friends and/or family members

Services We Offer

MAP provides individuals experiencing mood or anxiety-related symptoms with a diagnostic assessment and multi-disciplinary treatment approach. Licensed clinicians and psychiatrists provide evidenced-based psychotherapy (including CBT, IPT, and DBT) and psychopharmacologic management. Treatment teams work collaboratively with patients and families to alleviate symptoms and achieve goals. 

MAP’s array of services to patients and their families include:

  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Family psychotherapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Psychopharmacologic (medication) management and optimization
  • Collaboration with families, schools, and other medical providers
  • Referral and collaboration with acute care providers as needed
  • Access to a continuum of care treatment (i.e., intensive outpatient services)
  • Research opportunities
