Our Patients
This inpatient service accepts patients with any psychiatric disorder, including those with co-occurring substance use issues. However, we make every attempt to align patients with specialty services as may be required (e.g., a patient with anorexia nervosa will be referred to the Eating Disorders Program at JHH for expert specialty care and programs not available at JHBMC). The majority of the patients treated in the JHBMC General Psychiatry Service suffer from mood disorders such as, major depression, bipolar disorder and adjustment disorder, anxiety disorders such as panic, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, and severe and chronic mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Treatment Program
Within 24 hours of admission, each patient is evaluated in person by an attending psychiatrist and an individualized treatment plan is formulated by the treatment team within the first 72 hours of care. Patients are treated with medications when necessary, and individual and group psychotherapies as fitting to their needs. Social workers assess the patients’ social situations and assist with coordinating family or other support system meetings, set up discharge plans for a seamless transition to outpatient care, and assist with such interventions as coordination of return to work, applications for leaves, benefits and assistance, and reintegration into the community.
