About Mike Schar
Primary Academic Title
Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological Science
Background
Dr. Michael Schar an Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. His research focuses on technical development to improve cardiovascular MRI and to better understand cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Schär studied physics and then obtained a Ph.D. at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH on cardiovascular MR imaging and spectroscopy at 3 Tesla in 2005. Afterward, he joined Philips Healthcare as a clinical scientist where he first worked on-site at JHU and then was relocated to Phoenix, AZ. In August 2014, he joined the faculty at JHU.
Research Summary
My research interests focus on the development of novel MRI and MRS techniques to study cardiovascular disease in patients. These include the development of MRI methods to non-invasively quantify coronary endothelial function that previously could only be measured by invasive cardiac catheterization. Endothelial dysfunction is a marker for sub-clinical disease, an independent predictor of adverse cardiac events, and a potential target for medical interventions when disease progression is still reversible; and the development of MRI/MRS methods to non-invasively quantify energy metabolism in the human heart and exercising leg to better understand disease mechanisms in people suffering from heart failure, fatigue, and HIV.
