Background

Dr. Pearse is a subspecialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of all forms of critical illness requiring intensive care unit care including the multiple causes of acute respiratory failure as well as severe disorders of other organ systems including sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, toxic ingestions and acute liver or kidney failure. In the chronic ventilator unit, Dr. Pearse provides expertise in the diagnosis and ventilator liberation management of stable patients with chronic respiratory failure. Dr. Pearse has particular interest in the diagnosis and management of acute pulmonary thromboembolism and community-acquired pneumonia.

Research Summary

Dr. Pearse’s primary research interests have been on the pathophysiologic and molecular mechanisms behind the increased leakiness of lung blood vessels to water and protein that occurs when the lung is injured by variety of clinical insults. His work in this regard utilized animal and cell culture models of acute lung injuries such as transient interruptions of lung blood flow, severe pneumonia and malaria. Dr. Pearse has over 80 publications, reviews and book chapters, most of which focus on acute lung injury or pulmonary thromboembolism.
