Background
Dr. Natalie West is a pulmonary specialist in the Greater Baltimore area who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis.
Her focus also includes the treatment of interstitial lung disease, lung transplantation, COPD, asthma, and pulmonary hypertension. She also manages patients in the medical intensive care unit with acute respiratory failure caused by asthma, pneumonia, COPD, and the acute respiratory distress syndrome, as well as other conditions such as gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diabetic ketoacidosis, and shock from sepsis, hypovolemia, and heart disease.
Dr. West also serves as the associate program director of the Johns Hopkins Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program and plays an active role in recruitment of new fellows and mentoring fellows in the division.

- The Natalie West Lab collaborates with Noah Lechtzin's lab to study cystic fibrosis, with a particular focus on new resistant bacteria and their effect on the lung function of people with cystic fibrosis.
Research Summary
Dr. West has received grant funding from the NIH as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, evaluating treatment and outcomes of cystic fibrosis pulmonary exacerbations. She is currently studying biomarkers during pulmonary exacerbations.
Additionally, she is one of six national investigators that has been integral in the design of several large clinical trials coordinated through the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutic Development Network, which is examining treatment of pulmonary exacerbations (Standardized Treatment of Pulmonary Exacerbations study group, Clinical Trials STOP and STOP2).
Dr. West has been awarded the CRSP award from the CF Foundation (Clinical Research Scholars Program), which is a three-year award designed to train physicians to design and conduct clinical trials, and is evaluating the role of inhaled antibiotics during pulmonary exacerbations.
Lastly, she is focusing on the transition from cystic fibrosis to lung transplantation in individuals with end-stage lung disease, as well as outcomes for lung transplantation.
