Dr. Marlis Gonzalez-Fernandez is an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She specializes in physical rehabilitation after amputation, neuro rehabilitation, prosthetics, orthotics, and the treatment of swallowing disorders and speech and language disorders after stroke.
She serves as the medical director of Outpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Gonzalez-Fernandez received her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1999. She completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 2004 and a PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
She is a member numerous scientific societies, including the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Dysphagia Research Society. She has won several awards for her research, including the Passano Physician Scientists Award, the New Investigator Award of the Foundation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a Traveling Fellowship Award from the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine.

- The SIP Lab studies the mechanisms of normal and disordered swallowing. The team conducts research in the areas of swallowing rehabilitation after stroke, effects of aging on swallowing and measurement of swallowing physiology.
