Background
Dr. Yarmus is the director of Interventional Pulmonology at Johns Hopkins University and is the Vice Chair of Medicine for Strategic Planning and Clinical Business Development. He is an expert in the minimally invasive diagnosis of lung cancer. His areas of clinical expertise include interventional pulmonology, minimal invasive diagnostics and leads the Interventional Pulmonary research program at Johns Hopkins with research investigating innovative minimally invasive device development and early-stage bronchoscopic treatments. He also has extensive experience in the minimally invasive management of malignant airway obstruction, complex airway management, pleural diseases and symptom relief with minimally invasive procedures such as indwelling pleural catheters and pleurodesis. Dr. Yarmus also serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the Four Seasons Resorts and the Johns Hopkins International Lead with Care Program. He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Thoracic Society.

Lonny Yarmus Lab
- Clinical trials conducted in the Lonny Yarmus Lab focus primarily on minimally-invasive diagnostic testing for patients with lung cancer and local therapy options for malignant airway obstructions. We investigate ways to improve the early diagnosis of lung cancer, as well as the treatment of later-stage cancer, using the least invasive methods possible. We are also part of the LIBERATE clinical study for patients who have difficulty breathing and suffer from severe emphysema.
Research Summary
Dr. Yarmus' primary research focus in on the minimally invasive diagnosis of lung cancer and treatment of malignant central airway obstruction. One of his areas of interest is the development of minimally invasive devices to optimize lung cancer diagnostics as well as develop novel minimally invasive therapeutics in the lung. Dr. Yarmus is the PI of the first Interventional Pulmonary NIH award, which studied the effects of endobronchial intratumoral chemotherapy for malignant airway obstruction. In addition, he is investigating a novel micro optical coherence imaging technology for assessing COPD severity and treatment effect in asthma patients after bronchial thermoplasty. He is also is leading a study investigating a breath analysis for diagnosing lung cancer. Dr. Yarmus headed the establishment of the Interventional Pulmonary Outcomes Group (IPOG) whose mission is to provide and support multicenter prospective trials in the Interventional Pulmonary space. His goal is to advance the translational science of Interventional Pulmonology in order to develop new strategies to diagnosis, prevent or treat lung cancer and ultimately improve outcomes in lung cancer patients.
