About Katherine Wu

Primary Academic Title

Associate Professor of Medicine

Background

Dr. Katherine Wu is a general cardiologist for the Heart and Vascular Institute at Johns Hopkins Medicine with an interest in caring for patients with cardiomyopathies, coronary artery disease, and valvular heart disease as well as those interested in cardiovascular prevention. She has additional expertise in non-invasive cardiology imaging techniques.

Dr. Wu received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Health System School of Medicine, and completed her residency and a cardiology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She joined the School of Medicine faculty in 2000.

Dr. Wu's research interests include improving individualized risk prediction for sudden cardiac death and heart failure by developing and validating methods that incorporate novel cardiac imaging indices.  Her lab is funded by the NIH/NHLBI.

Dr. Wu has more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging and is a standing member of the NIH Clinical and Integrative Cardiovascular Sciences Study Section.

Dr. Wu leads a multi-disciplinary team with collaborators from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, JHU Whiting School of Engineering, and JHU Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.  She conducts ongoing investigations with the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study and Women’s Inter-agency Health Study. Her lab’s goals are to develop, implement, and validate novel imaging-based metrics of cardiac structure and function to improve risk prediction and stratification at the individual patient-level.

      Research Focuses:

      • Predictors of Sudden Cardiac Death by Magnetic Resonance Imaging
      • Subclinical myocardial disease in people living with HIV
      • Individualized risk prediction
      • Cardiac structural and mechanical modeling

      Funding Support:

      • NIH/NHLBI
      • Johns Hopkins Discovery Award Program
      • Johns Hopkins inHealth Pilot Project Discovery Program

      Active Projects:

      1. Identifying risk factors for subclinical myocardial disease in HIV infection
      2. Cardiac MR to Improve Clinical Risk Prediction in Defibrillator Patients
      3. Novel Methods for Non-Invasive Assessment of Myocardial Fibrosis Complexity and Disorganization to Predict Ventricular Arrhythmias
      4. Understanding clinical and subclinical predictors, biomarkers and pathogenesis of chronic diseases in HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) as compared to HIV-uninfected MSM: Ambulatory EKG and Echo Core Lab
      5. Personalized Risk Stratification for Sudden Cardiac Death Using Cardiac MRI and Virtual Heart Electrophysiologic Studies (PuRSUit-Virtual Heart) in Ischemic and Non-ischemic Cardiomyopathy
