Background
Dr. Debraj “Raj” Mukherjee’s clinical focus is the treatment of patients with primary and metastatic brain lesions. His clinical work and research emphasize the development of individual treatment plans that optimize survival and quality of life in all patients.
After receiving his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Mukherjee was recruited to Johns Hopkins, where he studied epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical design at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and served as co-director of the Neuro-Oncology Surgical Outcomes Laboratory in the Department of Neurosurgery.
Dr. Mukherjee completed an open and endoscopic skull base fellowship at the Center for Skull Base Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During this time, Dr. Mukherjee continued his patient-centered research pursuits, developing a national registry for patients with brain tumors and creating a disease-specific quality of life instrument for patients with skull base meningiomas. His work was supported by the American Medical Association and National Cancer Institute.

Neuro-Oncology Surgical Outcomes Laboratory - Lab Website
Directed by Debraj "Raj" Mukherjee, MD, MPH, the laboratory focuses on improving access to care, reducing disparities, maximizing surgical outcomes, and optimizing quality of life for patients with brain and skull base tumors. The laboratory achieves these aims by creating and analyzing institutional and national databases, developing and validating novel patient-centered quality of life instruments, leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence platforms to risk-stratify vulnerable patient populations, and designing novel surgical trials to push the boundaries of neurosurgical innovation. Our research also investigates novel approaches to improve neurosurgical medical education including studying the utility of video-based surgical coaching and the design of new operative instrumentation.
Research Summary
Dr. Mukherjee’s research emphasizes the development of individual treatment plans that optimize survival and quality-in-life in all brain tumor patients. His work involves the development of patient-centered, disease-specific quality-of-life instruments in order to quantify disease burden and to help patients make informed treatment decisions. With formalized training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and in clinical trial design, Dr. Mukherjee leads institutional and national efforts focus on the creation of brain tumor patient registries and adaptive clinical trials in neurosurgery. He also has an expertise in big data analytics and health policy, mining national datasets to determine national trends and disparities in neurosurgical care.

My neurosurgon helps me understand the recent mri I had and we talked about my question since one if the provider told me since its second surgery I may need to see the radiation oncologist. But my surgeon said its the last resort. I trust my provider for giving me the best care. Thats why I told the endocrinologist I will talk and discuss with my neurosurgeon about his suggestion.
