Background
Dr. Perno is the vice president of medical affairs at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He joined the hospital staff in 2003.
Dr. Perno focuses on aligning clinical resources across the continuum of care to ensure quality and patient safety as well as value-based services. His responsibilities include medical credentialing and privileging oversight, assessment of medical staff performance and enhancement of care coordination and clinical pathways with community pediatricians. He also oversees the medical library, radiology and lab teams.
Dr. Perno maintains clinical time in the Emergency Center, where he started as an attending physician in 2003 and served as assistant medical director from 2005 through 2015. He has chaired the hospital’s Medicine Quality of Care Committee, and in 2009 he was named vice chairman of the Department of Pediatric Medicine. Dr. Perno also has been a key member of several system innovation and quality improvement efforts and served as chief of the medical staff in 2016.
Dr. Perno earned his medical degree and an M.B.A. from St. George’s University in West Indies, Grenada. He completed a pediatric residency from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey, followed by a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine from Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Perno helps educate patients, families and the community on child health issues through a Johns Hopkins All Children’s online news segment, On Call for All Kids. In 2009, he was honored by the Clearwater Free Clinic as its Physician of the Year, and in 2018 he was honored as a top area doctor by Tampa Magazine.
Dr. Perno has authored numerous Emergency Center protocols and guidelines.
